How can the goals of SteP Berlin 2040 for densification, vertical expansion, and new construction be implemented using innovative scenario planning methods and seamlessly integrated urban timber construction?
We had an amazing kick off to our MPI workshop series funded by the Berlin senate bringing together stakeholders along the value chain from forest to city. Using an innovative digital and data driven tool (developed by TU Berlin, Fraunhofer IPK and Chora Conscious City), participants adopted the roles of producers, planers, architects, investors and housing cooperatives to negotiate the best scenarios for getting sustainable, energy efficient and socially affordable housing built in the pilot district Pankow built.
By bringing stakeholders together around one table and being able to configure different variables with the help of the Value Chain Digital Modelling (VCDM) tool, conflicting goals and trade-offs could be identified within an hour instead of weeks or months. With the valuable feedback on everything from financing to life-cycle assessments and considerations around material rights recovery we gained a lot of invaluable input for developing this project further.
Our next workshops will be building on the developed scenarios and use them as a basis to focus on different hurdles for scaling up the construction with biogenic materials. In our upcoming workshops as part of the series, we will look with key experts at the tendering processes and how these could be improved whilst subsequently considering aspects of financing and costs before turning to digital and AI supported production itself.
All workshops are curated with expert input by our members representing the value chain from wood to city. If you are interested in attending the workshops or would like to become a member, please contact us at contact@bauhuette40.com
