Bauhütte 4.0 was developed from a concept by Professor Emeritus Raoul Bunschoten and Prof. Dr. Holger Kohl. It's preliminary phase has been funded by the European Union through the programme Horizon 2020, under the EIT-Climate KIC Early Stage Innovation pipeline.

The foundation of the association was preceded by funding from the Climate Smart Forest Economy Programme.

The non-profit association operates independently.
